I Samurai Blu non sono andati oltre l'1-1 contro la Giordania. Affondati al 45' del primo tempo da un tiro di Fattah, deviato dal difensore Yoshida, i nipponici hanno trovato il pareggio solo al 92' con lo stesso Yoshida.

A fine gara l'allenatore campione d'Italia nel 1999 con il Milan confessa la sua delusione: "Un risultato inimmaginabile. Questa partita mi aspettavo di vincerla perchè l'avevamo ben preparata. Nel primo tempo abbiamo sempre tenuto il possesso della palla, costringendo la Giordania sulla difensiva. Dobbiamo migliorare sul piano dei gol. Va bene costruire gioco, ma bisogna trasformarlo in reti". Il Giappone è nel gruppo B con Giordania, Siria e Arabia Saudita.
