E' iniziata la terza operazione su vasta scala nell'area colpita dal terremoto e dallo tsunami dell'11 marzo alla ricerca delle 12 mila persone scomparse. Sono coinvolti circa 25 mila uomini, 50 navi e 90 aerei, nonchè l’esercito statunitense.

L'area interessata comprende le coste, l’entroterra di 3 prefetture e i 30 chilometri intorno alla centrale di Fukushima danneggiata dalla catastrofe.
