Il governo giapponese ha dichiarato ufficialmente lo stato di emergenza per la centrale nucleare di Onagawa nella prefettura di Miyagi, in seguito al violento terremoto dichiarando che il processo di raffreddamento di uno dei reattori nucleari non procede come previsto.

Intanto l'agenzia di stampa Kyodo riporta che una nave con a bordo 100 persone è stata travolta dallo tsunami. Secondo quanto riferito dai media nipponici il bilancio provvisorio delle vittime accertate è salito a 42.
